Brandon Fire and Emergency Services tackled a shed fire on the flats south of the Assiniboine River early Sunday afternoon.
Shortly after 1 p.m., emergency services responded to the blaze near the corner of 12th Street North and Stickney Avenue, near the Ukrainian National Hall.
The Sun arrived shortly after the firefighters, who quickly extinguished the fire and searched the area for hot spots.
On a ladder, a firefighter used tools to expose parts of the shed’s roof as another one periodically sprayed water on it from a hose connected to a hydrant. A couple of other firefighters wore oxygen masks as they took extinguishers inside the smoky structure
BFES Capt. Doug Wheatland told the Sun at the scene that the damage was isolated to some furniture outside the shed, the shed’s exterior and a small portion of the interior.
The cause of the fire had yet to be determined, but no one was hurt.
Jennifer Clyne, a neighbour who lives on the opposite side of the alley from where the fire was, said her family was watching a movie when they smelled smoke coming through their open windows.
They rushed to their backyard to see a couch in their neighbour’s yard on fire. The remains of the couch could be seen lying against the backside of the shed, the fabric having burnt away to expose the metal frame and springs inside.
She said they saw a few neighbours lending a helping hand, some running garden hoses for use as a firefighting tool while others carried full buckets of water on scene.
“If the neighbours hadn’t stepped in, it would have jumped,” Clyne said.
