8:30 a.m. — The City of Brandon Parks and Recreation is offering a disc golf tournament in Queen Elizabeth Park (200 26th St. North) until 4:30 p.m. This tournament is for 12+ and for players of all skill levels, even if you have never played. This is a great way to try the sport. Option for registration to include a set of beginner discs to use during the event. No other discs required. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each division. 3 p.m. — Nationally celebrated Canadian journalist and former Brandon Sun editor Haroon Siddiqui is returning to Brandon and will be sharing excerpts from his new memoir, “My Name Is Not Harry: A Memoir.” This is a free public event taking place at the Gathering Space of the John E. Robbins Library at Brandon University. Siddiqui is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario and is the winner of several journalistic awards, including a World Press Freedom Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Journalism Foundation.

7 p.m. — For the third consecutive year, Professional Bull Riders, Canada’s elite Cup Series, makes its way to Brandon, holding the PBR Brandon Chute Out in Westoba Place at the Keystone Centre. Tickets available at Ticketmaster.ca and at the box office.

7:30 p.m. — Duo526 Sonata Seminar 2024 final performance featuring violin and piano duos and performing works from the standard sonata repertoire at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. No admission fee.

8 a.m. — The YMCA Strong Kids Run is an unique race held in downtown Brandon on the last Sunday in May. It features four different timed events: 5K, 10K, 15K and 20K as well as a 1K Family Fun Run, 5K walk and 10K walk. The race starts outside the YMCA located at 231 Eighth St. at 8 a.m. The one-kilometre Family Fun Run takes place at 10:30 a.m. To register, visit ymcabrandon.ca/programs/strong-kids-run/.

8 a.m. — Come join us at the Minnedosa Agricultural grounds for a Pop Up Craft Market (at 10 a.m.) as part of the Minnedosa Lions Walk for DogGuides. There will be a kids’ area, dog trick and agility demonstrations, a barbecue and much more. Free admission. Lions pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. with registration from 10 to 10:30 a.m. followed by walk at 10:30 a.m.

11 a.m. — Road Rebels’ third annual Spring Poker Derby will be held today starting at Dinsdale Park (just north of the river on First Street). Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a noon start. Return by 5 p.m. to pick cards. Brandon to Minnedosa, to Neepawa, to Gladstone, to Austin to Carberry and back to Brandon. It’s $20 for the first poker hand, which includes barbecue supper in support of the Elspeth Reid Family Resource Centre. Make plans to attend the Road Rebels’ first car show of 2024 at Dinsdale Park from 4 to 8 p.m. with barbecue, 50/50 draw, DJ Double Clutchin’.

6 p.m. — We have a new murder to solve in The Dock on Princess’ “It’s Serial: Murder Mystery” event. 10 a.m. — Brandon Seniors for Seniors Co-op Inc. in partnership with Prairie Mountain Health Healthy Together Now announce the first Wellness Day at Seniors for Seniors (311 Park Ave. East) until 2 p.m. We are excited to host community groups including Prairie Mountain Health, Brandon University Healthy Living Centre, Hear Canada, the Alzheimer Society, Brandon Mobility, Westman Hospice and the Reflexology Association of Canada bringing you information about their programs. We will also be having a nutrition demonstration where you can try out some delicious healthy foods. This is a free event for the senior community in the Westman and surrounding areas. WEDNESDAY

9:30 a.m. — The Education Community of Brandon is pleased to invite you to attend Our Journey 2024: A Celebration to Honour the Educational Success of Our Community’s Indigenous Students at the Riverbank Discovery Centre (545 Conservation Dr.). Pipe ceremony at 9:30 a.m.; grand entry at 10:30 p.m.; hotdog barbecue lunch at noon followed by a feast at 4:30 p.m. and grand entry at 5:30 p.m. This event will take place in two parts, with a daytime and evening portion. Following each grand entry, there will be opening remarks, a powwow and presentations of Métis and Inuit dance and song to honour the educational success of Indigenous students.

10:15 a.m. — Drop by the Brandon Shoppers Mall Library Branch for Wiggly Wednesday, a story time program for children ages 0-5. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a caregiver.

1 to 4 p.m. — Join members of the Brandon Scrabble Club for an afternoon of Scrabble, coffee and laughs at the Brandon Public Library. Scrabble boards are provided, and all levels of skill are welcome to attend. No registration is required.

Join us for a guided tour as we stroll through our beautiful cemetery and learn about a few of the fascinating people who have been laid to rest over the last century. There are three separate tours: today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. with theme “An Introduction to the Brandon Cemetery”; June 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. with theme “Inspiring Stories from the Brandon Cemetery”; June 22 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. with theme “Murder and Mayhem Stories from the Brandon Cemetery.” These offerings are at no cost. Bailey’s Café (270 18th Street on the Brandon University grounds) — Help us ring in Wedding Bells: Celebrating 20 Years of Marriage with a Manitoba tradition … the wedding social fundraiser at Bailey’s Café, located on the Brandon University grounds in the old SUDS location at 9 p.m. This is an 18+ event and will feature dancing, drag show with Brandon’s House of Hex, special guest speakers, a 50/50 and raffle prizes. Proceeds will all go toward our Pride Week events happening from June 9-15. Early bird tickets are $10 and available at Smitten until May 23. Tickets at the door will be $15.

North Hill Inn (1129 Braecrest Dr.) — Get ready to dance with X100 Bichota featuring live DJs David Gomez and DJ Davier Gomez at 10 p.m. on Saturday. Ladies get in free before 11:30 p.m. Cover is $15.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — In honour of RCAF’s 100th anniversary, the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War, has switched to summer hours: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week at the Brandon Municipal Airport. Visitors will be invited to travel back to the 1940s while touring a Second World War-vintage hangar serving as a display area for aircraft, vehicles and hundreds of artifacts from that era. RCAF members who lost their lives during the Second World War are honoured on the museum’s RCAF Memorial wall.

Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, the Daly House was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls and women’s wear. Currently on exhibit is “The Sound of History: Band and Musicians of Western Manitoba” until Sept. 7. Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — Our Second World War vehicle exhibit includes eight military vehicles used by Canadians during the Second World War. Military vehicles provided firepower, logistical support, mobility and protection for the Canadian Army, enhancing their effectiveness during the Second World War. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first, the AGSM boasts two art galleries, studios for youth and adult classes and a gift shop that supports more than 90 Manitoban artists and artisans. In the Main Gallery: “The Problem of the Moon,” running until June 8. In the Community Gallery: “My Brandon Exhibition,” on until June 1. Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — The Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII Manitoba Dragoons Museum (within the Brandon Armoury, 1116 Victoria Ave.) — The museum is open Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed for lunch. Also open by appointment.

Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays; closed on weekends.

Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — The museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware and lumber merchant and prominent citizen in the community. The main house depicts how a family in the Victorian era would have lived. We also have two additional Annexes and a Coach House available for viewing. Wasagaming Community Arts (110 Wasagaming Drive, Clear Lake) — Wasagaming Community Arts cordially invites you to attend the first exhibition of the 2024 season on May 24 at 7 p.m. featuring the works of Douglas Ingram, David Arbuthnott, Shirley Rayner and Susan Graham McDougall. The exhibit runs from May 24 to June 25.

May 30 — The ninth annual Blessing of the Wheels to kick off the 2024 cruisin’ season will take place at 114 Ashgrove Blvd. with St. George’s with Redeemer Lutheran at 5 p.m. with a barbecue at 6 p.m. Start the season off by having your vehicle blessed for a safe and enjoyable motoring season. After the blessing, cruise to Crow’s General Store for a cool treat.

May 31 — Prairie Blend and Women In Harmony will be joining forces for a concert “Lead with Love” at Knox United Church at 7:30 p.m. Come to hear these two dynamic groups share their love for music. Admission is $10 at the door.

May 31 — The Summer Concert Series at Poor Michael’s Bookshop (322 Highway 10, Onanole) kicks off with entertainment by Sahara Jane and Ken Shorley on the Patio. Sahara Jane is a multi-faceted musician blending influences from Afghan, Indian and Canadian musical styles in a unique and uplifting way. Tickets are $25 in advance. May 31-June 2 — The Brandon Riverbank Discovery Centre in partnership with Riversong Wilderness Outfitters an Wilderland Adventure Company are offering a Canoe Leadership Course over the May 31 to June 2 weekend. This Outdoor Council of Canada and Paddle Canada combination course of Field Leader (Hike and Paddle) and Intro Tandem Canoe Skills, is designed to help outdoor leaders gain foundational canoe skills and group management training. Successful students will be able to take a formal leadership role in the planning and execution of a recreational tandem canoe day trip. Ideal for wilderness guides, outdoor educators and summer camp staff. June 1 — The City of Brandon Parks and Recreation presents another Great Brandon Mystery First Edition from 1 to 5 p.m. This is a competitive mystery-solving program for adults. Inspired by Explorer’s Club, teams of two to five will race against time to solve one of Brandon’s greatest mysteries. Participants will be required to travel around solving challenging clues and puzzles and even completing challenges. The first team to solve the mystery will receive a prize. June 1 — The Brandon Garden Club will be holding its annual plant sale fundraiser at the Dome Building located on the Keystone Centre grounds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

June 1 — Touch-A-Truck Brandon returns to the grounds at the Keystone Centre from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a unique fundraiser that is an interactive, outdoor family-friendly experience to allow kids to touch, climb, explore and discover all kinds of vehicles in a safe environment. A large variety of trucks are on hand every year including construction, farm, heavy-duty and emergency vehicles. There will be a “quiet hour” from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. free of sirens, music and honking for those who require it. A canteen serving hotdogs, burgers, Bannock dogs, chips and drinks will also be on hand. The cost is only $5 per person and payable in cash at the gate.

June 2 — On Jan. 23, 1978, Const. Dennis A. Onofrey, was tragically shot and killed at the age of 27 in Virden, Manitoba while investigating a suspected stolen motor vehicle. The refurbished 7th Avenue North Bridge in Virden will be dedicated in Constable Onofrey’s honour at 2 p.m.
