Brandon Fire and Emergency Services recognized their team of first responders who assisted during last summer’s fatal bus crash outside of Carberry at a BFES badge ceremony Friday morning.
“I want to say how very proud I am of each and every one of you,” Fire Chief Terry Parlow told an audience of firefighters, dispatchers and family members gathered at Fire Hall No. 1. “We start each day not knowing what the day will bring, but you did an amazing job on that day, as you do every single day.”
The team of 12 — five dispatchers, six firefighters and one student, who responded to the June 15, 2023 crash that killed 17 seniors from Dauphin – were awarded with commendation certificates.

Student Zach Tetrault responded to the scene and is now a firefighter with BFES.
Parlow said that BFES sent four of its ambulances to the crash to assist.
“Once the call was over, our focus that day and every day since has been focusing on our staff and ensuring that they have the support and resources they need,” the fire chief said.
Mayor Jeff Fawcett, city manager Ron Bowles, Brandon East NDP MLA Glen Simard and Brandon West PC MLA Wayne Balcaen attended the ceremony, which also recognized BFES members who were promoted in the past year and dispatchers who had achieved numerous years of service.
And the work of BFES didn’t stop that morning either — the ceremony was briefly interrupted by an announcement over the intercom for a fire-alarm call at an address in the city. A fire truck drove off to the call while the awards continued to be handed out.
“Every day the staff of Brandon Fire Emergency Services dispatchers and firefighter-paramedics make a difference in the lives of the residents in the city and the province of Manitoba,” Parlow said.
Six new firefighters have been recently hired by BEFS and four more are expected to be hired, along with five paramedics that will work in the Brandon police service’s new detention unit.
