A Turtle Mountain RCMP officer rescued a 20-year-old man from a water-filled ditch after his car lost control north of Killarney Wednesday morning.
Officers were on patrol on Highway 18, about 10 kilometres north of Killarney, when they saw a southbound car lose control and flip onto its roof in a water-filled ditch.
The officers stopped immediately and while one officer called for an ambulance, the other ran toward the ditch.

Jumping into the cold water, the officer saw that the car was filled with water and the passenger window was open. The officer was able to pull the driver out of the car and get him to safety.
The officer then returned to the car to make sure that nobody else was inside the vehicle.
“We are just so relieved that we happened to be in the right place to witness this collision and that we could respond immediately,” Sgt. Eric Descoteaux, the senior officer from Turtle Mountain RCMP who was on scene, said in a press release.
“Some days, being a first responder is heartbreaking, but because we were in the right place at the right time, and my partner jumped in that water so quickly, today was not one of those days.”
The driver, a Killarney man, suffered minor injuries and was transported to hospital, treated and released.
Descoteaux said the driver was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident, which he said contributed to saving his life.
