A 28-year-old Brandon woman has pleaded guilty to attempted murder for stabbing her former partner last year.
Andrea Solis Cordoba entered her plea in Brandon court earlier this week. Her lawyer, Tony Kavanagh, read an agreed statement of facts about the stabbing to the court.
On March 18, 2023, Cordoba’s former partner was picking her up at the address where she lived with her mother to take her to the mall, as they had an appointment for her children.
They were standing in the yard, where her children were present. Cordoba had concealed a kitchen knife in her clothing.
Suddenly, after a comment about clothing, Cordoba stabbed her partner three times — twice in the neck and once in the back.
After she stabbed him, she herded her children inside and told her mother to lock the door quickly. She discarded the knife in the yard.
Cordoba went to the bedroom with one of the children and calmly waited.
After a call was made to 911, the police arrived and arrested Cordoba, who was described as co-operative and calm. She provided a statement to police, in which she said her former partner had “crossed the line” and that she had wanted to kill him for various reasons.
She deliberately hid the knife before going outside and acknowledged in her statement that she intended to kill her former partner. Later, she told a psychiatrist that she had changed her mind about killing him at the very last moment, though she still continued to stab him in the neck.
Kavanagh said Cordoba was initially deemed not fit to stand trial, but after she was stabilized with medication, a psychiatric team determined that she was able to tell the difference between right and wrong at the time of the stabbing.
Judge John Combs raised an issue with plea on the fact that she said that she had “changed her mind” about wanting to kill him.
“In a very short period of time, your honour, she did plan, as simple as that plan my be, and she executed that plan of stabbing (him),” Crown attorney Grant Hughes said. “Stabbing one in the neck is certainly an indication — it’s a very dangerous place to stab someone.”
Kavanagh emphasized that his client was pleading guilty to the intent to kill part of an attempted murder charge.
“Even though she had a moment where she didn’t want to kill him, she still proceeded to stab him, that intent is there,” the defence lawyer said.
Cordoba acknowledged that she was pleading guilty to stabbing her partner and intended to kill him.
A pre-sentence report was ordered and sentencing for Cordoba is scheduled for Nov. 1.
