Prosecutors have dropped a second-degree murder charge against a man who was arrested in connection with the death of a Brandon man whose remains were found in a burnt car in 2022. Two other men remain charged with first-degree murder in the case.
Supervising Senior Crown Attorney in Winnipeg, Libby Standil, filed a stay of proceedings form with the Brandon courthouse for the second-degree murder charge against Christopher Cutlip on Tuesday.
The form does not provide reasons for the staying of the charge. When reached by the Sun, Standil said she would have to consult a manager about media policy and didn’t respond by press time.

Cutlip, 40, was charged with second-degree murder last September after an extensive RCMP investigation, which began after the body of Brandon resident James Giesbrecht, 37, was discovered on Oct. 13, 2022 in the trunk of a burned 2007 Honda Accord. The vehicle was parked on the outskirts of Brandon in the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis.
A medical examiner determined that Giesbrecht did not die from the fire, but was murdered beforehand that day.
Redstone Wombdiska, 28, and Joseph Lindsay, 36, have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Giesbrecht’s death.
All three men were arrested and charged while they were already incarcerated for other matters.
Cutlip still faces numerous charges for weapons offences between May and July 2023, which remain before the court.
Giesbrecht lived in Brandon, was a father of three, and had ties to Peguis First Nation.
