People lining up to get into the Manitoba Summer Fair this weekend shouldn’t have to wait for long because of the new metal detectors that have been added to this year’s security measures.

Provincial Exhibition events and operations manager Kristen Laing Breemersch said the increased security is a preventive measure. This is the second year in a row that the fair’s security has been beefed up.

“We want to be proactive and put precautions in there. We want to be able to streamline higher and higher presence for families to come and enjoy themselves, take part in the community,” Laing Breemersch said Friday.

Security on site has been increased by about 25 per cent this year, she said. In addition to the metal detectors there are security wands and bag checks to keep out alcohol, drugs or weapons.

The Provincial Exhibition is responsible for hiring its own security for the event, with this year’s contract given to GardaWorld. The Brandon Police Service has also assigned members to patrol the fair and is encouraging any on-duty officers to do walk-throughs, but a BPS spokesperson did not elaborate on figures.

The new security measures have apparently done their job. There were no security incidents on site last year, nor had their been any this year as of Friday.

Laing Breemersch wants to keep it that way.

“We had a phenomenal year last year with the increase of security and presence on the ground with our provider … and we want to continue that for our events. It’s really important for the Provincial Ex and for the Manitoba Summer Fair staff and co-chairs to have an event that is absolutely safe for all ages to come and for families to attend,” Laing Breemersch said. “So the (security) presence to eliminate anything on grounds that might compromise families enjoying the time — we’ve beefed up security for that reason.”
