RM of ELTON — Traffic on Highway 10 just north of Forrest temporarily came to a halt late Thursday morning after an overheight metal grain bin being transported in the southbound lane got wedged under a CN Rail overpass.

When the Sun arrived on the scene roughly 10 kilometres north of Brandon Municipal Airport shortly after 11:30 a.m., the majority of the bin was still stuck under the bridge as Mounties directed traffic around a tow truck crew working to free it.

A crumpled chunk from the top of the bin remained attached to the Heritage Co-op truck the whole bin once sat upon.

Eventually, the tow truck pulled the bin out from under the bridge so that it rested horizontally and then dragged it, with the metal screeching as it rubbed against the asphalt, to the side of the highway.

Representatives from CN Rail, CN Police and Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure arrived on the scene to investigate.

The railway representatives inspected the overpass bridge from above and below, searching for any visible signs of damage. The CN Police officer said he’d never seen an object stuck under that overpass before in his 10 years with the company and that he hadn’t seen any noticeable damage.

Around 2 p.m., RCMP sent an email to the Sun saying its officers had first responded to the incident at 10:25 a.m., that traffic flow had returned to normal and no one had been hurt.

Typically, the railway overpass in the Brandon area that makes the news is the Kemnay Bridge west of the city on Highway 1A, which frequently gets overheight semi-trailers stuck under it. However, no reported incidents have occurred at that bridge this year.

Heritage Co-op declined to comment on the incident when reached by phone.

CN Rail and Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure did not respond to requests for comment on the incident.
