Mosquito fogging ordered in south-central Manitoba
The provincial government ordered mosquito fogging in several municipalities Thursday after mosquitoes carrying the West Nile virus were detected
The order is for Winnipeg, Altona, the RM of Macdonald, RM of West St. Paul and the RM of Rhineland.
While Southern Health was the region where the largest number of Culex tarsalis mosquitoes — the species known to carry the virus — were found between July 21 and 27 with 342, Prairie Mountain Health was second that week with 107.
However, no Culex tarsalis mosquitoes in PMH have tested positive for West Nile virus this year. Southern Health has trapped 34 mosquitoes that tested positive, Winnipeg has found seven and Interlake-Eastern has trapped 42.
Two Manitobans have contracted West Nile virus this year, but their cases are related to travel outside of the country.
The City of Brandon has not fogged for mosquitoes so far in 2024. The city’s five mosquito traps contained an average of 338 trapped insects last Saturday and 135 last Sunday.
Fogging in Brandon is only carried out if a daily trap count average exceeds 1,000 mosquitoes, if any individual trap exceeds 2,000 mosquitoes or if the province orders fogging for health reasons.
