The City of Brandon and the City of Chervonohrad in Ukraine officially signed a twinning agreement on Monday in a virtual ceremony that linked officials in both countries.

Chervonohrad is a mining city in Western Ukraine, close to both the regional centre of Lviv and the border with Poland.

Brandon City Council voted to approve the twinning agreement in a special meeting held last month.

The text of the “agreement of twinness and co-operation” states that the two cities will collaborate on tourism, culture, youth, sports, science and education, protecting the environment and cultural monuments and exchanges of experiences in various other fields.

“We are thrilled to establish this partnership with our new sister city in Ukraine,” Brandon Mayor Jeff Fawcett said in a release. “This agreement showcases the importance of collaboration and our shared vision for both cities. We are excited about the opportunities this partnership will bring to our communities through this co-operation.”

His colleague, Chervonohrad Mayor Andriy Zalivskyi, said in the same release that he is “honoured” to sign the agreement.

“As we navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing war, we celebrate this historical moment and appreciate the support of our new sister city,” Zalivskyi said.
