Brandon managed to break a 134-year temperature record on Sunday.

According to Environment Canada and Climate Change, the mercury hit 31.4 C, beating the previous 31.1 C record that was set on the same day in 1890.

“It beat (the previous record) by 0.3,” Stephen Berg, a meteorologist with Environment Canada and Climate Change, told the Sun.

Many other parts of southwestern Manitoba also broke records on Sunday, including Dauphin, which broke its previous record by 1.6 C, Melita by 3 C, and McCreary by 0.2 C.

“(It) was quite a warm Westman day,” Berg said.

While the weather has cooled off as a result of a cold front attached to the high-pressure system that brought in warm air from the south last weekend, Berg said Brandon should see warmer temps return later this week.

“It looks like there’s going to be a bit of a warmup again into the high teens, low 20s for Friday onwards,” he said.

Meanwhile, the meteorologist said the month of September was 4.9 C above normal for the city, though it did not break the record for the hottest September on record, which was set in 2009.

He said that while sometimes there can be cold snaps and cold months, the overall long-term patterning is a warming trend that is associated with climate change.
