A southwest Manitoba community newspaper is celebrating 125 years in business.

The Boissevain Recorder’s staff gathered on Friday at the local Legion hall, hosting a public event with archived newspapers on display, slideshows of front pages, and coffee and cake.

“It’s part of the fibre that keeps the network together,” said the newspaper’s editor, Lorraine Houston. “It’s amazing to see all these front pages of the Recorder. And the history. And people go, ‘Oh, I remember that!’”

The Recorder put out its first edition in October 1899.

About 100 people had come by the local Boissevain Legion Hall to view the archived newspapers in the first half hour, Houston told the Sun. The event was set to run from 1:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.

The editor said the event highlights how the newspaper has been reporting on the community for so many years.

“My whole thing about this celebration is I want people to recognize the importance of journalism. That there’s somebody here who has been recording history for 125 years,” she said.

“Imagine a world that could be of Facebook writing news for people. Or governments putting out news releases.”

Looking back at the newspaper, Houston said it’s crazy to think how much has changed since its inception.

“I look at the 125 years here this paper has seen … My gosh, it went through two (world) wars, two pandemics,” said Houston. “Even in my time from the 1980s, it was exciting when we got a fax machine in our office.”

She pointed out that people used horses to get around when the newspaper started, and now they drive automobiles; dial-up internet is gone, and so are the days of developing photographs in darkrooms.

“We are celebrating the past. But I think the key thing is we are looking to celebrate the future.”

In April, the editor announced the newspaper was for sale. She and her husband are looking for someone with a love for Boissevain to carry on the tradition.

“I hope we can still continue to help for the future,” she said.

The couple purchased the Recorder in 1999, about 20 years into her career there. Now, they are looking for someone with love for the small community to hand the reins to.
