MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES

Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum (CATPM) (Brandon Municipal Airport, Highway 10, 1.6 kilometres north of Brandon) — The CATPM, Canada’s only air museum solely dedicated to the preservation of those who trained and fought for the British Commonwealth during the Second World War, has switched to winter hours: open seven days a week from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Brandon Municipal Airport. On Nov. 5 at 1:30 p.m. in the museum’s canteen, we will have a presentation from the renowned author Ted Barris about his new book, “Battle of Britain — Canadian Airmen in their Finest Hour.” Entrance by donation, his book will be available for purchase. On Nov. 10 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium at 1:30 p.m., the Mark Humphries Orchestra will be performing a benefit concert in aid of our museum. Tickets for sale through the WMCA box office. The museum will remain open until Remembrance Day, Nov. 11, with a free open house and then reopen in the spring of 2025 from 1-4 p.m. (weather permitting). Daly House Museum (122 18th St., Brandon) — Built in 1882, this was the original home of Brandon’s first mayor, Thomas Mayne Daly. Artifacts include a collection of late 19th-century and early 20th-century furnishings, First World War memorabilia, toys, dolls, and women’s wear. Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. (September to June). Royal Canadian Artillery Museum (Building N-118 Patricia Rd., CFB Shilo) — We opened our new temporary exhibit, marking the 110th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The main features of the exhibit include a trench wall, First World War artillery and two machine gun pits. Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday. Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Unit 2, 710 Rosser Ave., Brandon) — Manitoba’s oldest centre for visual art and one of Canada’s first since 1907. The AGSM boasts two exhibition spaces, an art school and a gift shop that supports more than 60 local Manitoba artists. On Oct. 26 Ann Germani’s The Green Bike Series, “Happiness is a Bike Ride,” with original sketches and tunes of Cape Breton, takes place from 3 to 5 p.m. In the Main Gallery until Nov. 30 is “Sunke Sapa Hdeshka,” a retrospective exhibition of work by the late Elvis Antoine; and “Black Prairies,” which honours more than 100 years of Black cultural production in the Prairies. In the Kayes Community Gallery is “Me, I Think,” by Manitoba author Craig Russell, with a series of nearly 100 selfies taken outside the vernacular of social media and is on display until Nov. 7. Fall hours: Tuesday to Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday noon to 5 p.m. Closed on Sunday and Monday. Entry inside The Town Centre parkade. No admission fee. Killarney’s Heritage Home for the Arts (44 Water Ave., Killarney) — Killarney Turtle Mountain Arts Council’s gallery is in the Heritage Home for the Arts. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed all statutory holidays. Special tours can be arranged by calling the arts administrator at 204-554-0023. Brandon General Museum and Archives (19 Ninth St., Unit 101) — Attractions include the Brandon History Hall, Manitoba Telephone History, the BJ Hales Natural History Collection and rotating exhibits celebrating Brandon’s roots. ArtsForward (293 Mountain Ave., Neepawa) — ArtsForward is the central arts venue in Neepawa in visual, literary, performing and material arts. Hours: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday; closed on weekends.

Virden Pioneer Home Museum (390 King St. West, Virden) — Museum house was built in 1888 by James F. Frame, a hardware and lumber merchant and prominent citizen in the community. The main house depicts how a family in the Victorian era would have lived. There are also two additional annexes and a coach house available for viewing. Currently closed for the season. Oct. 24-26 — The Manitoba Ag Ex takes place at the Keystone Centre. This is a completely family-friendly event and there is no charge for admission. All the shows are free to attend. Oct 25: Enjoy an evening of country music at Party in the Dirt featuring Quinton Blair in the Westoba Agriculture Centre of Excellence, Doors open at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at provincialexhibition.com.

Oct. 24-27 — Manitoba Showcase is celebrating 40 years connecting artists and community in Brandon. This year’s conference features keynote speakers, panel discussions, real-life testimonials from artists and educators, parallel presentations, regional discussion groups, networking opportunities and much more. Attendees can receive peer-to-peer and one-to-one career advice and information from Manitoba Arts Network staff, specialist advisers and other showcase artists. There will be three showcases, each featuring two emerging artists and four professional artists. This event is free to attend. For more information, visit wmca.ca.

Oct. 24-27 — Lucky Break Ranch presents Haunted Forest with carnival games, pumpkin carving, outdoor movie, face-painting, concession stand, 50/50 draw and so much more. Admission: adults $8; youth $5; family $20. No-scare hours: 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.; scare hours: 7:30 to 10 p.m. Raising money to help Manitoba Cancer Society and Riverdale Harvest Food Bank. Help fill the coffin — for every food bank item you bring to the Haunted Forest you will receive a ticket for a draw. The more you bring, the better chance to win!

Oct. 25 — Ukrainian folk singing sensation Gerdan Theatre will be performing at First Presbyterian Church (39 12 St.) from 7 to 9 p.m. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. This is a 16-member folk singing group from Chernivtsi, Ukraine. Oct. 26 — The Konektis Choir is presenting two concerts at the First Presbyterian Church (39 12th St.). Guest artist at 2 p.m. include Sonolux from Winnipeg and Meliora from Stonewall. Joining Konektis choir at 7:30 p.m. is Descant Get Enough from Glenboro; Killarney High School Choir and Crocus Plains Chamber Choir.

Oct. 26 — Bring your kiddies down to The Dock on Princess (1133 Princess Ave.) for our annual Kids Halloween Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dress up in your Halloween costume for some fun, games, food and prizes. Oct. 26 — A Halloween-themed dodgeball tournament hosted by the Assiniboine College Students’ Association will be held in the gym of the Victoria Avenue East campus from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event is open to all students and community, and individuals must register in teams. Participants are welcome to wear Halloween costumes, but face masks or anything hanging off are prohibited for safety issues.

Oct. 26 — Destalker Laughter Crusade comedy show by the award-winning comedian Destalker featuring McRemote, McMoris and more will take place at Knox United Church at 5 p.m. Tickets available at TicketGateway.

Oct. 26 — Let’s Build a Beast in the BJ Hales Natural History Gallery at the Brandon General Museum and Archives at 1:30 p.m. Join us to learn about the collection and get inspiration for crafting your beast, listen to stories and more. Oct. 26-27 — Join us for Brandon’s “Big One” Arts and Crafts sale in the Manitoba Room and the UCT Hall at the Keystone Centre from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each weekend. This year is the 35th anniversary with 175 booths of local handmade arts, crafts and food. Daily admission is $5 (12 and under are free). Proceeds go to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation to go towards helping with Cancer Care in Brandon and Winnipeg.

Oct. 27 — Cities Church Brandon (1011 5th Str.) is hosting Candypalooza from 9 to 11 a.m. Wear your favourite princess or superhero costume for a morning of music, games and lots of candy. Get your kids ages six months to 10 years old dressed up in a fun (but not scary) costume and join us.

Oct. 27 — A Halloween Parking Lot Party will be held in the parking lot of Calvary Temple (620 35th St.) from 2 to 4 p.m. Come and join us for a fun-filled afternoon with cotton candy, popcorn, candy bags, games, prizes, hotdogs and bouncy houses. And it is all free. We are also accepting donation to Samaritan House Food Bank.

Oct. 27 — Minnedosa Curling Club Inc. Fall Supper will be held in the Minnedosa Curling Complex (61 6th St. SW) with seatings at 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. Menu includes turkey, meatballs, mashed potatoes, veggies, salads and dessert. Adults $20; children aged 6 to 12 yrs $10; five and under are free.

Nov. 29-30 — Block ‘n’ Roll volleyball tournament returns to the Healthy Living Centre. The cost to register a team in the co-ed tournament is $250. Register at HealthyLivingCentre.ca.
