More charges in homicide

A third teen has been arrested in connection with the death of a Brandon man in Swan River last week.

Manitoba RCMP reported on Nov. 2 that officers had responded to a report of an unresponsive man in Swan River’s Legion Park around 11 p.m. the previous night.

The unnamed 21-year-old man was found with what police described as “obvious injuries” and was pronounced dead on scene.

Two days later, RCMP announced they had arrested a 16-year-old boy from Swan River and charged him with second-degree murder in connection with the case.

That same day, police said another 16-year-old old boy from Swan River had also been arrested.

Mounties confirmed Wednesday that this boy was also charged with second-degree murder and remanded into custody.

RCMP also said Wednesday that on Nov. 5, a third Swan River boy, aged 15, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter.

The case is still under investigation.

Trespassing arrest

A 30-year-old man was arrested by Brandon police on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly trespassing at a business on the 100 block of Seventh Street.

Around 1:01 p.m. that afternoon, police received a report from the business citing concerns about trespassers allegedly setting up camp behind some shipping containers in its parking lot.

Staff said they asked the people to leave, and they responded aggressively.

When officers arrived, police allege that the 30-year-old man confronted them when told he was going to be issued a ticket under Manitoba’s Trespass Act.

Then, the man allegedly tried to escape by jumping over a railing, but was arrested shortly after.

On top of the ticket, he was also charged with resisting arrest. He was later released with a Jan. 9, 2025 court date.

Suspect caught

A 13-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a break-in at the QuikStop convenience store on the 100 block of 18th Street on Tuesday afternoon.

Police initially arrested the boy during a persons check in relation to an arrest warrant issued for him allegedly violating court-ordered release conditions.

After arrest, police realized that he was a suspect in the Sept. 27 break-in at the QuikStop.

The boy was charged with two counts of failure to comply with an undertaking, one count of breaking, entering and theft and one count of disguising with intent. The boy’s guardian was informed of the arrest and he was held overnight to appear in court on Wednesday morning.

Teens face weapons charges

Two teens were arrested near Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon for allegedly carrying weapons.

A release issued by the Brandon Police Service on Wednesday said the school’s resource officer received a report of someone with a weapon near the school.

After that, police arrested a 14-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl near the school. No one was said to be hurt in the incident.

Though the BPS release did not identify the school or the time of the incident, a spokesperson confirmed to the Sun that it was Crocus Plains and the report was received around 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

The boy was charged with uttering threats, possession of a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and failure to comply with an undertaking. The girl was given the same charges except for uttering threats.

The police spokesperson said they would not disclose what weapons were seized as the school was preparing a release about the incident to send to parents.

The Brandon School Division shared a copy of a letter sent to parents of Crocus Plains students by vice-principal Jen Emberly on Tuesday afternoon. It said the matter had since been resolved and a knife had been recovered.

“We take these incidents very seriously and will always take necessary steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff,” Emberly said in the letter.

Sex-related crimes

A 40-year-old man subject to an RCMP warrant was arrested in Brandon for sex-related offences early Wednesday morning.

Police stopped the man while driving in the 600 block of 12th Street around 5:35 a.m. on Wednesday. The Manitoba RCMP-endorsed warrant was for sexual assault, sexual interference and failure to attend court.

A Brandon Police Service spokesperson told the Sun Wednesday that the man is not a Brandon resident.

After RCMP secured the man a Dec. 23 court date, he was released from BPS custody.
