The Brandon Hills Model Railway Club opened its doors to the public Saturday afternoon, offering a glimpse into the world of model railroading at its open house at the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, located in Building D at the Brandon Airport.

The club showcased two intricate model train layouts: a smaller N-scale set and a larger HO-scale set, delighting visitors of all ages with detailed craftsmanship and realistic settings.

Club member Erich Stumme told the Sun the event was to show visitors the nuances of the two setups that took the team five years to build.

“The N-scale model has a ratio of 1:160, making it smaller, while the HO scale is 1:87, which is the most common scale in the world,” Stumme said on Saturday. “HO is the standard, but both offer unique opportunities for creativity and challenges.”

The club, which boasts 25 members, gathers every Saturday to work on the layouts.

The club’s members, he said, come from a wide range of professions.

“We have bookkeepers, retired soldiers, students, and bankers and we share a mutual love for model railroading and a commitment to collaborative creativity,” he added. “Some members enjoy running the trains, others focus on electronics or landscaping. It’s a hobby with endless possibilities and challenges.”

The open house featured more than the regular layouts seen on typical Saturdays, offering visitors a deeper dive into the world of model railroading. According to the retired German soldier, the event was designed to highlight the hobby’s creative and technical aspects, from building miniature landscapes to incorporating advanced electronics.

For many attendees, the exhibit sparked nostalgia.

“We often hear people say they had model trains as kids or have one tucked away in their attic,” Stumme said. “The open house is a great way to reignite that childhood interest while inspiring new generations.”

Stumme emphasized the club’s gratitude toward the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum for providing space for their activities, “We’ve been here for nearly five years and are very thankful for the support,” he said.

The open house, he said, drew a steady stream of visitors, including families with children captivated by the intricate details of the trains. The club hopes the event will encourage newcomers to explore the hobby and perhaps even join their ranks.

“Model railroading is about creating a small world with trains — it’s a fun, creative, and rewarding hobby,” said Stumme. “And it’s never truly finished. There’s always something new to build or improve.”
