Hamiota’s Matthew Tannas has made lottery history by winning a whopping $40 million after using the quick pick selection on the Dec. 3 Lotto Max draw, splitting the $80-million jackpot with another lucky winner in Quebec.

This is only the second time the Lotto Max jackpot has reached its highest level and is the fourth-largest lottery prize ever won in the province of Manitoba.

Tannas was on a hunting trip in Alberta when he made his purchase on the Lotto Spot app.

“I remember seeing (the jackpot) was $80 million and thinking, I’d better buy a ticket!” Tannas was quoted as saying in a news release from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC).

Tannas and the winner from Quebec matched all seven numbers selected in the draw, which were 9, 14, 21, 26, 29, 32, and 41.

When Tannas checked the app after the draw, he noticed the jackpot had been won. He said he was speechless when he realized it was him.

“Because it was an online ticket, it was hard to believe seeing it on my phone, I had to double-check,” he said.

When the Sun asked WCLC how Tannas double-checked, media relations strategist Emily Olsen said that when purchasing lottery tickets on the app, the results appear as soon as the numbers are drawn.

“So, he would have refreshed his app to check again, and I believe he cross-referenced the actual numbers on the WCLC website just to be sure,” Olsen said in an email to the Sun.

Tannas added that the win means more than he can put into words.

“It’s kind of surreal,” he said. “We think it’s important our kids keep working and going to school, but this will definitely help.”

“My kids are going to be able to all go to university now,” he said. “I’m making sure all of my kids have reliable vehicles.”

“My daughter’s ’89 Jeep — named Dolly — is getting restored. I’ve had to replace parts with scraps a few times, so it’s going to be great to fix it up properly,” Tannas said.

A new truck for Tannas is also in the works, and he’s already planning a trip to Nova Scotia for the first time to see his sister.

“She’s come to visit us, but we’ve never been out there before,” he said, adding: “Other than that, we’re going to invest this carefully.”

Western Manitobans have won big during the last month when it comes to lotteries. Brandon couple Carol and Blaine Sangster won $1 million during the Nov. 22 Lotto Max draw.
