A 78-year-old woman who was reported missing on Christmas evening has been found safe, Blue Hills RCMP confirmed on Thursday.
Rita Anne Mawer was reported missing on Wednesday evening, following which officers from the Brandon, Souris and Carberry detachments began conducting patrols to find her, Manitoba RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Paul Manaigre told the Sun.
“Officers searched along with some family members, on the municipal roads in the area it was believed she may have been lost in,” Manaigre said on Thursday. “Weather would have certainly been a factor as the officer I spoke to late last night advised it was extremely foggy in the area, which could easily allow someone to get disoriented as to where they were and which direction they were going.”

Mawer, who also goes by “Anne,” was last seen driving her dark green 2014 Honda CRV near Alexander. She had informed her family she was returning home from Brandon at around 5 p.m. but failed to arrive, prompting concerns that she may have gotten lost due to heavy fog in the area.
The senior was last sighted at around 9:30 p.m. on Provincial Road 259, heading eastbound toward Rivers. Following the missing report, her family, along with RCMP, launched an immediate search, combing roads in the surrounding areas.
Manaigre advised travellers to travel with a cellphone, let friends or family know when they’re leaving, and when they are expected to arrive at their destination.
“Make sure to travel with an emergency kit, which includes food and water in case your vehicle breaks down or you become stuck. Travel on the main highway and roads and try not to take shortcuts that people may travel less on,” he added.
