A 23-year-old man in custody at the Brandon Correctional Centre (BCC) has died after being assaulted, Manitoba Justice announced in a news release on Monday.
In an earlier news release issued on Sunday, Brandon Police Service (BPS) reported it had received a report of an inmate at the BCC being assaulted. When officers arrived at the correctional facility, they found the victim being attended to by paramedics, following which he was taken to the hospital.
The man was pronounced dead at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Members of the BPS Major Crime Section and Forensic Identification Unit are continuing to investigate the incident and are unable to provide further details at this point, BPS and Manitoba Justice stated. As required by law, the man’s death was reported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
