Westman Drama Ministries members, aged eight to 18, performed various songs and dances at McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church on Saturday evening.
The young talents performed songs and dances from beloved musicals, including “Newsies,” “Peter Pan,” “The Greatest Showman,” “Annie,” and “Winnie the Pooh.” The event, organized by Westman Drama Ministries, aimed to raise funds for the group’s upcoming large-scale productions.
The show, which drew an audience of approximately 80, was a testament to the creativity and hard work of the performers.

Director Kailyn Loewen told the Sun that many of the performances were choreographed and arranged by the children, showcasing their talent and initiative.
“The fundraiser, which also included a silent auction, sought to generate $3,000 towards the $13,000 needed for the ministry’s February productions of ‘Annie Jr.’ and ‘Winnie the Pooh Kids,’” she said in an interview.
Loewen, who founded Westman Drama Ministries two years ago, explained the motivation behind the initiative: “I wanted to create a theatre group where kids could come together without worrying about financial barriers. Theatre should be accessible to everyone, and we emphasize family and Christian values, ensuring all our shows are safe and welcoming for families.”
Rehearsals for the group, she said, are held weekly on Mondays and Tuesdays, with participants travelling from Brandon, Boissevain, Killarney, and other parts of the Westman region. While the ministry rents space at McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church, the young performers come from various communities, reflecting the inclusive nature of the program.
She added the funds raised through the cabaret and silent auction will help cover essential production costs, including licensing fees, costumes, and technical equipment for the February shows, which will take place in the church’s main auditorium.
Despite the challenges of organizing such an event, Loewen credits the program’s success to the dedication and collaboration of the families involved.
“It takes a community to make this work,” she said. “I couldn’t do it alone. The families bring their unique gifts, and together, we make something special.”
The evening began with a lively rendition of “Try Everything” from “Zootopia” and continued with a diverse lineup of acts. Attendees were also treated to desserts, creating a warm, family-friendly atmosphere.

For those looking to support Westman Drama Ministries, Loewen added, the next opportunity to see their productions will be in February, with “Annie Jr.” scheduled for Feb. 14 and 15, and “Winnie the Pooh Kids” on Feb. 1.
“Both promise to be a celebration of young talent and the power of community,” she added.
