The driver of the white truck that collided with a Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) freight train on Sunday afternoon has been identified by the RCMP as a 22-year-old male. A resident of Virden, the man is said to be in a “critical condition” following the collision.

RCMP spokesperson Paul Manaigre told the Sun the driver was initially transported to a hospital in Virden before being airlifted to Winnipeg for further treatment.

“The 22-year-old male driver, from Virden, was taken to hospital in Virden and then life-flighted to Winnipeg where he remains in critical condition,” he said on Monday. “CP Police now has carriage of the investigation.”

The collision occurred at 2:50 p.m. at a location about five kilometres east of Virden, and south of the Trans-Canada Highway on Sunday afternoon. The Reston and Melita RCMP detachments responded to the incident.

CPKC spokesperson Terry Cunha told the Sun the incident occurred at a railroad crossing.

“At approximately 2:40 pm CT on Sunday, January 5, a CPKC train made contact with a vehicle at the 147 W range road railroad crossing east of Virden,” Cunha said in an email. “The train moved later Sunday afternoon and the incident is under investigation.”

An eyewitness at the scene described the dramatic aftermath, noting that the train, which was carrying shipping containers, struck the truck broadside and pushed it along the tracks before coming to a halt.

“I got to the scene shortly after 3 p.m.,” the eyewitness said. “Emergency services, including ambulances, arrived around the same time. I’m not sure how many people were in the truck, but the rescue team removed an individual by 3:40 p.m.”

Local firefighters reported limited details as of Sunday afternoon, though they confirmed the collision’s location.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, with no details released yet regarding possible contributing factors, such as weather conditions, visibility or train speed.

Transport Canada did not respond to the Sun’s email and had not posted information about the incident on its site as of Monday afternoon.
