A fire at the Eastview Landfill in Brandon on Friday night was extinguished overnight after a rapid response from Brandon Fire & Emergency Services and city operations staff.
The fire started in an active landfill cell and was contained with the help of heavy equipment, the city confirmed. Crews monitored the site throughout the weekend, and the landfill is expected to reopen today.
Brandon Fire and Emergency Services received a call about the blaze at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Deputy Fire Chief Marc Lefebvre told the Sun on Saturday.
“Crews responded immediately and worked through the night alongside landfill staff, who used heavy equipment to manage the situation,” Lefebvre said. “The landfill site will remain closed today (Saturday) as the fire continues to smoulder. They’re using heavy equipment to locate the source.”
The exact cause of the fire, he said, is yet to be determined, adding landfill fires can be challenging to assess due to the nature of the materials involved.
While the landfill closure disrupted access temporarily, regular garbage and recycling collection across Brandon will proceed as scheduled, a city press release issued Saturday said.
The city also cautioned residents about potential health hazards from the smoke and advised residents to avoid the area until further notice as a precaution.
The release stated smoke may pose a health hazard; therefore, “all necessary precautions” are being taken to ensure the safety of staff and the public. Avoid the area if possible.
The city expressed gratitude for the coordinated response from emergency crews and landfill staff. Updates on the reopening and the results of the investigation are expected in the coming days.
