Brandon police arrested an intoxicated 41-year-old woman on Tuesday evening after receiving a report about a disturbance on the 400 block of Fifth Street, stemming from an alleged fight between two inebriated women. MAN ARRESTED ON MURDER CHARGES, FIREARM OFFENCES

Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) arrested a 30-year-old man on attempted murder and weapons possession charges on Jan. 9. Officers received a report about an attempted arson at a residence at Sandy Bay First Nation. The accused had reportedly fled the area before officers arrived on scene. He was seen driving on Highway 50 near the community of Langruth, and sped off when officers attempted to stop his vehicle. MFNPS officers followed his vehicle to Sandy Bay, where after a short pursuit his vehicle slid into the ditch, and the accused reportedly fled the scene on foot.

He was later identified as Preston Todd Dean Whitford from Portage la Prairie, also wanted in connection with a homicide under investigation by the RCMP. The accused was later tracked to an abandoned mobile home, where he allegedly threatened the police with a firearm before surrendering. The weapon found in his possession was later determined to be an imitation firearm. Officers also searched his vehicle and located an SKS assault-style firearm and a pellet handgun, both belonging to the accused.

Whitford has been charged with multiple counts relating to unauthorized weapons possession and resisting arrest. He has also been transferred to the Manitoba RCMP as part of a homicide investigation, which remains ongoing.Weapon seized from Preston Whitford by Manitoba First Nations Police Service on Jan. 9 in Sandy Bay First Nation.
