A woman, 28, succumbed to her injuries following a fatal collision east of Portage la Prairie on Wednesday morning, the RCMP said.

The collision took place about three kilometres east of Portage la Prairie and was caused by an intoxicated man, 24, said to be driving a stolen truck and who fled the scene of the crash, the RCMP said in a media release.

Mounties have identified him as James Lorne Hilton from the Rural Municipality (RM) of St. Andrews, located about 251 kilometres northeast of Brandon.

The deceased woman — from High Bluff — was driving a westbound SUV at the time of the crash, which took place at 10:50 a.m. on Wednesday on Highway 26.

The pickup truck driven by Hilton was heading west on the highway and crossed the centre line, causing an eastbound pickup truck to “take evasive action to prevent a collision. The eastbound pickup truck then collided with a westbound SUV,” the RCMP said.

The driver of the eastbound pickup truck was identified as a 21-year-old man from the RM of Portage la Prairie. He was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

During the crash, Hilton hit the ditch and his truck rolled, but he was able to get out, and “was picked up by a passing motorist and dropped off at a nearby gas station,” the release added.

Once the motorist dropped Hilton off, he returned to the crash scene to give the officers his location. Investigators later discovered that Hilton was picked up by a taxi and had information that he was heading to Winnipeg.

Officers with the Headingley RCMP contacted the taxi driver who reported that Hilton had been dropped off near a motel on the Trans-Canada Highway in Headingley, from where he fled on foot. Officers patrolling the area were able to locate Hilton and take him into custody without incident.

He faces numerous charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, operating a vehicle while impaired, and failing to stop after an accident that resulted in death.

Portage la Prairie RCMP, along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, said an investigation is ongoing.
