The Strathclair Theatre Chorus brought their harmonious melodies to Knox United Church on Saturday afternoon for a concert that was as much about raising spirits as it was about supporting the arts.

Sponsored by the Brandon Rotary Club, the performance is part of an ongoing annual tradition where the Chorus alternates between Knox United Church and Trinity United Church, each year supported by one of the respective organizations, planning committee chair Barry McNabb said.

He explained the concert was one of five performances this season.

“Two were held before Christmas, with three more following in the new year and this year’s series will conclude next weekend,” McNabb said. “The funds raised from these events directly contribute to the upkeep of the historic Bend Theatre in Strathclair, Manitoba, the home of the group’s parent organization.”

Maintaining a building like that is no small feat, said McNabb, who joined the group about 40 years ago.

The Chorus boasts approximately 50 members, ranging in age from 25 to 75. Members hail from various communities, including Brandon, Minnedosa, Newdale, Erickson, and Strathclair.

“Our diverse backgrounds — spanning careers in farming, teaching, nursing and accounting — add richness to our shared love of music,” he added. “Music is the universal language that can speak to anyone. It’s about the joy of sharing that connection with audiences.”

Despite Saturday’s frigid weather, an estimated 100 to 150 people attended the concert. McNabb noted that attendance was slightly lower than in previous years, likely due to the cold.

The Chorus performed selections from their program titled “Some Nights,” showcasing a variety of choral arrangements.

For those who missed the Brandon performance, McNabb added, the final concert of the season is set to take place next weekend, offering another opportunity to experience the magic of music for a meaningful cause.
