WINNIPEG — Black Hawk helicopter flights began along Manitoba’s border with the United States on Sunday.
Canada’s government announced last week it was sending drones and leased Black Hawk helicopters to increase security along the border, days before Donald Trump’s scheduled inauguration as president. Trump had threatened to impose tariffs unless Canada tightened border security.
“The flights will target all illegal activity along the border; this includes searching for individuals who illegally enter Canada between official ports of entries and for the human smugglers who facilitate their travel,” Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Monday.
“It will also be used to detect and stop illegal smuggling and trafficking of contraband such as illicit drugs into, and out of, Canada.”
