STABBINGS REPORTED AT BIRDTAIL SIOUX FIRST NATION
Manitoba First Nations Police (MFNP) reported two recent instances of stabbings, both at the Birdtail Sioux First Nation, on Thursday. In the first instance, officers arrested two men after responding to a report of a male, 28, having been stabbed and taken to the Birdtail Health Centre. The victim was reported to have severe stab wounds and was later transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre, where he underwent surgery. He is recovering and has been discharged. Police investigations in the case led to a knife and wooden club — reportedly used for the attack — having been recovered.
Officers further revealed that the attack was a result of a dispute involving two family members, and that intoxication caused by alcohol might have been a factor leading to the dispute.
MFNP have arrested James Donald Bunn, 43, who has been charged with aggravated assault and Issak Lathaniel Keyshawn Bunn, 21, who has been charged with attempted murder. Both the accused are from the Birdtail Sioux First Nation.
In the second instance, MFNP received a report of a male having been stabbed on Jan. 3, who was discovered on the road by public works employees. On arrival, officers found the man to have sustained severe injuries and having experienced considerable blood loss.
The victim was rushed to the Russell Health Centre in a police vehicle, where he received medical care and was stabilized. He is currently said to be recovering.
Investigations by officers revealed the victim was stabbed by a family member, following which MFNP issued an arrest warrant for Shannon Christopher Shingoose, 40. Also from Birdtail Sioux First Nation, the accused has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
MFNP have requested help from the public for any additional information relating to both crimes. The MFNPS Birdtail Sioux First Nation detachment can be reached at 204-569-4621.
