The Arizona State University (ASU) Wind Ensemble is set to premiere the full-band version of “Arcadia Trombonica” composed by Brandon University alumnus Kenley Kristofferson Thursday.

The world premiere showcases an innovative fusion of traditional wind ensemble instrumentation with the nostalgic tones of retro gaming.

Originally written as a duet for trombone and 8-bit music, “Arcadia Trombonica” has been expanded into a full-band arrangement, offering a richer dynamic range and broader sonic palette.

The project was commissioned by ASU’s School of Music low brass professor Nora Wilson and is a testament to the evolving relationship between acoustic and digital soundscapes. The development of “Arcadia Trombonica” demonstrates the intersection of artistic creativity and rigorous research, BU vice-president (Research and Graduate Studies) Bernadette Ardelli said.

“This composition is not only a musical achievement but also a deep exploration of the relationship between acoustic and digital soundscapes,” Ardelli said. “It reflects Brandon University’s commitment to innovative, research-informed artistry.”

Greg Gatien, the dean of music at BU, emphasized the significance of the collaboration behind the piece.

“‘Arcadia Trombonica’ highlights Kenley’s incredible skill as a composer and underscores the strong culture of collaboration and creativity that has long been a hallmark of our wonderful School of Music,” Gatien said. “Nora Wilson’s contribution as a trombonist and pedagogue was pivotal to Kenley’s conception of this work. Her deep understanding of the instrument, combined with a sophisticated and inclusive sense of artistry, certainly played into making this a truly special piece of music.”

Kristofferson, known for blending traditional and contemporary elements in his compositions, drew inspiration from the storytelling and soundscapes of 2D side-scrolling video games. His extensive research into 8-bit music history and technical intricacies shaped “Arcadia Trombonica,” allowing the piece to capture the essence of both orchestral performance and digital sound design.

The project received significant backing from the Brandon University Research Committee, the Manitoba Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Expressing her gratitude, Wilson said: “These organizations provide vital resources that empower artists and researchers to innovate and create meaningful work. Their support allows projects like ‘Arcadia Trombonica’ to flourish and reach new audiences.”
