Ex who posted intimate video gets jail

A Brandon man who uploaded pornography of his ex-fiancée to a website without her consent was sentenced to nine months jail time on Thursday.

The 36-year-old was found guilty in a Brandon courtroom last year by provincial court Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta. His sentence came this week with the jail time, an order to register himself on Canada’s National Sex Offender Registry for 20 years and two years of probation after exiting prison.

A court-imposed publication ban intended to protect the identity of the victim also prevents the Sun from naming the man.

The accused and his ex-fiancée made consensual intimate videos during their previous romantic relationship, as the Sun previously reported. The woman became aware that the man posted the videos to Pornhub without her knowledge or consent in August 2020, when he texted her a link to the Pornhub website.

The man pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer argued that the man had uploaded the video to Pornhub for safekeeping and personal storage.\

Donations needed for coldest night

Samaritan House Ministries is hoping to raise $20,000 through its annual Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk on Feb. 22. Walkers, volunteers and donations are needed, says Heather Symbalisty, executive director of the non-profit.

“This is our biggest fundraising campaign,” said Symbalisty. “Our goal is $20,000 and we are not quite there yet, so we would really like to hit that mark.

“We know in this economy that everybody is struggling, and it’s been challenging for us too, our fundraising dollars are down somewhat,” she said.

The Coldest Night of the Year is a family-friendly walk that raises money to support non-profits across Canada that help homeless and low-income Canadians. Brandon’s two-kilometre route starts and ends at Knox United Church. Check-in is at 4 p.m., with send off at 5 p.m., and at the finish line refreshments will be provided for the walkers.

“The walk really represents what an individual has to go through if they are out on the street, and the cold that they have to experience,” Symbalisty said.

“So, we really need to motivate – not only the Brandon community, but anyone in Westman who wants to participate,” added Symbalisty.

This year’s walk in Brandon will raise money for Samaritan House Ministries food bank and the Safe and Warm Shelter.

So far, there are 10 teams with a total of 42 walkers registered, who have raised $14,769 of the $20,000 goal.

School bus hit by truck

A school bus carrying 14 children ended up on its side Wednesday morning, after colliding with a half-ton truck Wednesday morning in the Rural Municipality of Lorne, about 142 kilometres southeast of Brandon.

All the students who were in the age range of Kindergarten to Grade 11, had been taken off the bus by the time emergency crews arrived at the crash scene at the intersection of Road 28 North and Road 66 West at about 8:30 a.m.

They sustained minor injuries and all were taken to hospital, with an additional few transported to Winnipeg for further assessment, RCMP said, adding that charges are pending against the 17-year-old driver of the truck.

The pickup truck was southbound on Road 66 West when it collided with the school bus that was heading east on Road 28 North. According to police the truck hit the rear end of the bus on the driver’s side.

The teen truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries, was treated and released. If charged, the offence would fall under the Highway Traffic Act.

Pembina Valley RCMP continue to investigate.

Cando opens Alberta rail yard

Cando Rail & Terminals is set to open its Southlands Rail Yard in Strathcona County, Alberta.

The terminal will provide rail capacity to serve Imperial’s Strathcona refinery, which is adjacent to the new terminal, as well as other area customers, the organization’s press release issued Thursday stated.

The organization is excited to leverage the Southlands Rail Yard to debottleneck its logistics operations in Western Canada, Canada fuels manager Scott Maloney said.

Now that the terminal is complete, Cando will perform rail operations at the Cando Southlands Rail Yard and Imperial’s Strathcona refinery, the release added.

While Imperial is currently constructing Canada’s largest renewable diesel facility at its Strathcona refinery, it will use locally sourced feedstocks, such as canola oil, which will be transported to the site by rail.
