Chased with lit blowtorch

A 37-year-old man is facing numerous charges after allegedly assaulting his girlfriend with a blowtorch.

Brandon police officers responded to a call about a disturbance in the 700 block of Braecrest Drive on Wednesday at about 8:40 p.m.

A 28-year-old woman told police that the man had assaulted her throughout the day, including chasing her with a lit blowtorch. Police say there were numerous scratches on her body and bruises on her face, which they documented. She was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre for care.

The 37-year old man was charged with assault, assault with a weapon, failing to comply with a release order and mischief. The mischief charge was laid, according to officers, because they found a clothing item that linked him to another case. He was held in a BPS detention cell to be released for a court date on Thursday.

Breach of conditions

A 21-year-old man was arrested in the city’s west end Wednesday evening, and faces several charges related to breaking previous court conditions, police say.

At 10:16 p.m., officers responded to a residence on Willowdale Crescent for a report of a disturbance and say an intoxicated 21-year-old man was the cause of the issues. Police add there was an outstanding warrant for the man’s arrest for failing to comply with a release order.

The man was also allegedly breaching current conditions of a release order that included a curfew and abstaining from alcohol, police said. He was arrested, charged with three counts of failing to comply with a release order and held in a detention cell to be released for a court appearance on Thursday morning.

Arrested on warrants

Just before 2:15 a.m. Thursday, Brandon police officers stopped a taxi in the 200 block of 26th Street and arrested a 30-year-old man who had allegedly failed to attend court. Police say a 30-year-old man who was a passenger had three outstanding warrants for his arrest — one for assault and two counts of failing to attend court. The man was held in a BPS detention cell for a scheduled court appearance Thursday morning.

Additionally, a 38-year-old man was arrested on the 1300 block of Fifth Street Wednesday night when Brandon police officers said they went to a residence on an unrelated manner, and he was there. According to police, the man had failed to comply with probation. He was released and given a notice to appear in court March 27.

On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., police went to a residence on the 1600 block of Stickney Avenue and arrested a 28-year-old woman on a warrant for failing to comply with probation. She was released and provided with a notice to appear in court on March 27.
