A 17-year-old male and a 19-year-old man face multiple gun-related charges after a shotgun was fired at a person on Fifth Street on Thursday in what police called a critical incident.
The Brandon Police Service had received a call regarding a gunshot in the 100 block of Fifth Street Thursday afternoon, and when officers responded, any suspects had already left the scene.
Though there were no injuries as a result of the shotgun blast, BPS spokesperson Janet Reichert said “it was aimed at a person.”
“There was a shot. No one was injured,” Reichert told the Sun on Friday. She also stated that the person who fired the shotgun was “known” to the victim or victims in the case.
“It was a known-to-them party,” Reichert said.
Sometime around 5 p.m. on Thursday, police established a perimeter in the area and successfully used the force’s K-9 unit to track the suspects to a suited residence on the 200 block of Fourth Street at the corner of Princess Avenue.
One eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous told the Sun that by 5:20 in the afternoon, the whole area had been locked down, and the BPS armoured rescue vehicle was positioned outside of the Fourth Street residence.
“They had everything blocked off for about a block, block and a half in every direction,” the eyewitness said, adding that officers in tactical gear were positioned to the east of the residence in the alleyway, as well as in the front entrance off of Fourth Street.
Reichert stated that six people were found in the home. All were detained at the scene for questioning but only two were charged.
A 17-year-old male has been charged with assault, being party to the offence of a careless use of a firearm, party to the offence of pointing a firearm, and party to the offence of discharging a firearm, as well as three release order breaches.
The 19-year-old male has been charged with careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon when not authorized, discharging a firearm, uttering threats and unauthorized possession.
Through questioning, Reichert said police believe that the 19-year-old male had fired the shotgun.
Reichert also stated that police have found video of the shooting, though she did not say how it was obtained.
As of Friday, police had refused to release the name of the 19-year-old male. The 17-year-old is a youth and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Both suspects attended court on Friday and have been remanded into custody.
