The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has launched a probe into a police arrest in Brandon in which officers executed an order under the Mental Health Act and arrested a man who later complained of pain in his ribs and was taken to the hospital for X-rays.

The Brandon Police Service filed a notification last week that said officers had been involved in an arrest that led to X-rays in January. BPS reported that officers responded to the 1400 block of Applewood Bay on a mental health order and saw a man holding two large objects, advised the man he was under arrest and then pursued him into the home after he retreated from the door.

A struggle ensued in the residence and officers used force to handcuff the man, according to police and IIU reports of the incident.

The man later complained to officers that his ribs hurt and said they were broken. Officers then transported the man to the hospital for X-rays.

The IIU sent a notification out to the media on Wednesday saying the agency is mandated to investigate this event because it involves serious injuries as defined under the IIU regulation. Brandon Police Service filed the notification about the incident on Feb. 20, and said the event took place on Jan. 9 at around 1:13 p.m.

Witnesses or people with information or footage are asked to contact the IIU at 1-844-667-6060.
