A large crowd came out to cheer on 21 different performances for the Skate Brandon Ice Show on Monday evening at the Keystone Centre’s Flynn Arena.
The end-of-season show offers skaters a chance to shine as they use the skills they have been learning over the winter months for a final performance.
Brandon’s CanSkate program includes beginner levels to adult-level instruction, including the StarSkate figure skating course. Skate Brandon vice-president Crystal Schepp says there were 82 participants in this year’s CanSkate course, along with 26 figure skaters in the StarSkate program.

There were also 19 adults in the Wheat City Connexion synchronized skating team this year.
Schepp says skating continues to be a growing sport in Brandon, in spite of a few slow years.
“We have found that our numbers were down for a few years,” Schepp said. “But I believe our numbers are beginning to grow again, which is really nice. It’s really good for the club.”
The figure skating program helps young skaters build their skills, and move up the star levels, readying them for competitions if they’re interested.
This year, skaters from the program competed in events in Brandon, Winnipeg and Killarney, and finished with a provincial competition in Portage la Prairie a few weeks ago.

“I find that we’re a very hockey-focused community,” Schepp said. “But I see the figure skating community growing, which is really nice.”
For those who are still looking to strap on some skates and get out on the ice, CanSkate’s 2025 spring registration for the five-week StarSkate program is now open. Spots are limited. For more information, go to skatebrandon.ca
