With a federal election call expected Sunday, only the Conservatives and the People’s Party of Canada have announced candidates for ridings in western Manitoba.
The Liberal, NDP and Green parties had yet to post the names of candidates for the Brandon-Souris and Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa ridings as of Thursday afternoon, and did not respond to requests from the Sun before deadline.
The country is rumoured to launch into a federal election Sunday, according to unnamed sources that spoke with the CBC and The Canadian Press, starting the clock on an election race of less than two months.
“A Liberal party source, (who was) not authorized to speak publicly about the party’s election plans, said ministerial offices were emptying out on Thursday and that MPs are heading back home to get ready for the campaign,” The Canadian Press reported yesterday.
Campaigns in Canada must continue for at least 37 days and no longer than 51 days, with few exceptions, under Elections Canada rules.
In Brandon-Souris, incumbent Conservative MP Larry Maguire was first elected in 2013. He was re-elected in the 2015, 2019 and 2021 elections. Maguire was born in Souris, raised on a farm and graduated with post-secondary studies in agriculture from the University of Manitoba. He lived in Virden as well, and now lives in Brandon.
Jim Oliver, the candidate for the People’s Party of Canada, farms poultry, cattle and swine on a 160-acre homestead near Riding Mountain National Park, according to his online bio. He spent 12 years operating his own automotive parts store, before selling it to focus on family life. He was born and raised in Manitoba, and homeschools his children.
In Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa, current Conservative MP Larry Mazier was elected in 2019. His history includes being president of the Keystone Agricultural Producers, an organization for farmers in Manitoba.
Retired RCMP superintendent Donnan McKenna is posted as the People’s Party of Canada candidate for Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa. (Submitted)
PPC candidate Donnan McKenna is retired from the RCMP, where he worked for 30 years and rose to the rank of superintendent. He served on the board of the John Howard Society as well as a number of safety organizations, and was the director of security for the 2018 Alberta Summer Games.
