Aggravated assault with coffee cup

Brandon police responded to a call at Brandon Correctional Centre Monday at 8:26 a.m. for a report that a serious assault had just happened.

Police say video surveillance showed the incident, leading to charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon against a 27-year-old man who allegedly attacked his 35-year-old cellmate with a coffee cup.

The accused hit the victim numerous times in the head and face. The victim was taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, said police.

The accused was scheduled to make a court appearance in connection with his two charges on Tuesday.

Robbery with violence

A 38-year old woman has been charged with robbery with violence after allegedly punching a woman several times in the face in the city’s downtown Monday evening.

A 26-year-old woman went to Brandon Police Service headquarters at 8:10 p.m. to report she had just been assaulted on 10th Street between Victoria and Louise avenues. She told police that a woman came up to her demanding she turn over her bag and the shirt she was wearing. When the victim refused, police said, she was punched several times in the face but was able to run to BPS headquarters.

Officers found a woman matching the suspect’s description in the area and charged her with robbery with violence. Upon her release she was given a court date of May 29.

Breach of court order

A 37-year-old man was arrested for allegedly driving while suspended after Brandon police conducted a traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway.

On Tuesday at 3:01 a.m., officers stopped a vehicle between First Street North and 18th Street North and determined the man was a suspended driver and in breach of a conditional sentence order. He was charged with that breach and taken to a BPS detention cell for a Tuesday appearance in court.

Intoxicated teen

A 16-year-old girl was arrested Tuesday at 4:23 a.m. when Brandon police responded to a call about a disturbance at a residence on the 500 block of 23rd Street. When officers arrived, they said an intoxicated female was causing issues. She was held in a BPS detention cell to be released once sober.
