Manitoba’s agriculture minister announced on Tuesday that the province will provide $300,000 in support to 4-H clubs in the province.

Speaking at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair on 4-H Day, Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced the funding and said it would come over three years.

“It is important to inspire young people to learn about agriculture and its values,” said Kostyshyn. “If it was not for our farmers, food would be a challenge.”

Kostyshyn said the province’s agricultural producers don’t receive enough appreciation and encouraged a crowd of about 100 people to reach out to the Manitoba 4-H Council if they are interested in getting involved in the organization.

Manitoba 4-H Council president Greg Penner accepted a cheque during Tuesday’s presentation.

With thousands of members and volunteers in the province, 4-H is an international organization that provides youth with opportunities to develop communication and leadership skills while learning about a topic of their choice, according to the 4-H Manitoba website.

“Each member picks a project and works with a volunteer leader to develop their skills related to the project of choice. In Manitoba there are over 90 interesting hands-on projects like beef, photography, outdoor living, machines, crafts and more,” the website says.

“Beyond projects there are also club activities, provincial events and travel opportunities where members can meet new people, build friendships and have fun.”
