Former stepfather charged with sexual assault

A 42-year-old man has been charged with sexual assault and sexual interference after Brandon Police Service’s Major Crimes Section led an investigation into a decade-old complaint.

A 21-year-old woman reported being assaulted by her former stepfather when she was between nine and 12 years old, police said in a news release.

The man was arrested on Thursday and held overnight in a BPS detention cell for a Friday morning appearance in court.

Helping neighbour suffers smoke inhalation in fire

Brandon Fire and Emergency Services and members of BPS responded to two fires in a span of about an hour late Thursday night and early Friday morning.

In one instance, a person reported smoke inhalation after trying to get people out of a home in the city’s west end.

A woman called 911 at 1:03 a.m. Friday and said she could see flames and smoke coming from a nearby residence on Williamson Drive.

Police said it is believed that a barbecue smoker on the back deck was the source of the fire, which firefighters were able to contain.

After attempting to evacuate the homeowners, a neighbour reported smoke inhalation. Police said medical aid was provided on the scene.

Just before midnight on Thursday, a 911 call came in about a fire on the 1900 block of Hilton Avenue.

A portable pressure washer truck, which had a boiler to heat the water, caught fire. There were no injuries, the fire was extinguished and the vehicle was towed.

Both fires were deemed non-suspicious, police said.

Missing 50-year-old man

Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP are searching for a missing 50-year-old man.

Patrick Simmons was last heard from when he was in Dauphin on April 30. He told a family member he was planning to travel to Somerset but never arrived, RCMP said Friday.

RCMP were contacted about his being missing Thursday afternoon.

Simmons is described as five-foot-11 and about 200 pounds. He is balding, with brown-blond hair on the sides. He was wearing a black-grey hoodie.

He might be driving a red 2017 Ford F150 pickup truck, licence plate No. GZY 597.

RCMP are asking anyone with information about where Simmons is to contact the Ste. Rose du Lac detachment at 204-447-3082, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com.
