Suspected arson in vacant house
Brandon Police Service is asking the public for information on a suspicious fire in the downtown area on Sunday morning.
The fire occurred at a boarded-up house on the 400 block of Eighth Street. It was reported to 911 at 8:06 a.m.
Brandon Fire and Emergency Services responded and put out the blaze.
There were multiple points of ignition, police said in a news release. Entry was made through a second-floor window on the north side of the house, which was accessed by the porch roof, the investigation showed.
Anyone with information on the fire is asked to call BPS at 204-729-2345.

Stolen pit bull recovered
Brandon police recovered a stolen pit bull on Sunday after an officer spotted a man walking the dog on the 700 block of Rosser Avenue.
The man initially fled and turned the dog loose, BPS said in a news release, adding the man became “hostile and aggressive” when police caught him.
He was arrested for breaching the peace, held in detention cells and was to be released “once calmed down,” the release said.
The dog’s owner was called to the scene and retrieved the animal, but declined to make a complaint.
The dog, a female pit bull, had been stolen from the 1000 block of Sixth Street, police said.
Couple wouldn’t pay cab fare
A 34-year-old woman and 36-year-old man were arrested Sunday night for allegedly refusing to pay for a $73 taxi ride.
A cab driver pulled up to BPS headquarters at 11 p.m. with two passengers who wouldn’t pay their fare, police said in a news release. When the taxi stopped, the two ran away.
Shortly after midnight, the driver called police and said he saw the two suspects at a business on 10th Street.
Video surveillance confirmed the pair’s identity, and police arrested and charged the man and woman with fraudulently obtaining transportation. The two were given a court date of July 7.
