The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba is investigating a man’s injuries after a use-of-force encounter occurred with an officer from the Brandon Police Service, the IIU said Tuesday in a news release.

On Monday, Brandon police notified the IIU of the incident that took place on May 8 at about 8:15 p.m.

BPS officers went to the detention section to lodge a man under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act. The man was unco-operative in the admission process, the BPS notification said.

Officers escorted the man to a cell and as they approached the cell, a “use-of-force” incident occurred.

BPS said the man lost his balance, fell and hit the back of his head on the concrete floor, causing a loss of consciousness and a laceration.

Emergency medical services were called to the detention section and transported the man to the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Any witnesses or individuals who have information or video that may help with the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.
