The province’s police watchdog has cleared the RCMP of any responsibility for the serious injuries suffered by a Cornwallis man last month.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba released its findings on the incident on Wednesday.

On the morning of April 29, a man called RCMP saying he needed assistance in his home on the 200 block of Meadows Crescent in the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis, the IIU said in a news release.

Officers went to the home and knocked on the door, when they heard a single gunshot.

An emergency response team responded and cleared the residence with the help of a drone.

A man was found inside the home with serious injuries. STARS Air Ambulance transported the man to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

RCMP reported the incident to the IIU at around 9 a.m.

After reviewing the information received from the RCMP and the affected person, the IIU determined the RCMP and its officers were not responsible or contributed to the man’s injuries, the release said.

It said the officers involved provided an appropriate medical response once they identified the man needed medical attention.

“There is no further need for the IIU to investigate this incident and the matter will now be considered concluded,” the release said.
