Koch Fertilizer issued an apology to Brandon residents after its facility experienced a temporary power loss on Monday night, causing three of its operating plants to shut down.
“When plants shut down this way, ammonia odour may be detected downwind of the facility, which was the case last night,” the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
“Per our standard procedure, we engaged City of Brandon authorities, business neighbours and regulatory authorities,” the statement added. “We apologize for the inconvenience the shutdown caused the community.”

The company said it was now in the process of restarting the plants.
“During this time, the community may hear elevated noise, smell ammonia odour and potentially see flaring during the startup process. These are all normal parts of the startup process,” it said.
“We’re working diligently to minimize the duration and inconvenience. The safety of our employees and this community is our top priority.”
Updates on startup activities can be found on the Koch Fertilizer Canada Facebook page.
