Almost 600 new Brandon University graduates will receive their degrees during two days of convocation celebrations this week.

Four ceremonies will be held today and tomorrow at BU’s Healthy Living Centre.

Faculty of Science and School of Music graduates will receive their degrees during today’s 10 a.m. ceremony. At 2 p.m., the Faculty of Education ceremony will take place.

A sea of Faculty of Education graduates attend a previous year's Brandon University convocation ceremony. This year's celebrations will be held today and tomorrow.

Friday’s ceremonies start with the Faculty of Healthy Studies at 10 a.m., followed by the Faculty of Arts at 2 p.m.

The entire community is invited to help the graduates celebrate. To accommodate the large crowds, the intersection of Louise Avenue and 20th Street will be closed to traffic to give everyone the chance to safely and freely explore the campus.

Parking at BU is free during convocation, with signage posted to guide visitors to the parking areas. The ceremonies will also be livestreamed at BrandonU.ca/Convocation/Livestream.

Convocation closes a week of celebrations that began with last Friday’s Our Journey ceremony recognizing Indigenous student success at BU, Assiniboine College and the Brandon School Division.

Two honorary degrees will be presented during this morning’s ceremony — to radio host, musician and writer Tom Allen and soprano Elin Rombo.

Other elements to the convocation ceremonies include speeches by valedictorians from each faculty, an honour song and the presentation of awards to educators.

This year’s recipients include Department of Chemistry chair Bryan Hill and associate professor of curriculum Ellen Watson, who will both receive the Senate Award for Excellence in Teaching during today’s morning and afternoon ceremonies, respectively.

Department of Nursing associate professor Nancy McPherson will receive the Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Community Service during the Friday morning ceremony, and Métis philosopher Lorraine Mayer will receive the Senate Award for Excellence in Research on Friday afternoon.

Skye Foord-Kelcey of Souris School will be presented with a Distinguished Teacher Award — given out each year to recognize excellence in the K-12 school system — during this afternoon’s ceremony.

Each graduate will receive a commemorative print by Neepawa artist Katy Martin, along with their degree parchment, as a memento of their time at BU.
