Brandon Police have a 16-year-old male youth in custody following an incident at École Secondaire Neelin High School this afternoon that prompted a lockdown of the building.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, BPS said that officers responded to a report of an incident at the school involving two male youths at 1:15 p.m. Officers arrived shortly after and by 1:22 p.m., a 16-year-old male suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

BPS said that as a precaution, the school was placed under lockdown. That lockdown has since been lifted.

A post by the Brandon School Division this afternoon noted that the lockdown had been implemented “due to an intruder in the building with a weapon.”

Police said they were not releasing details about what transpired between the two youths at this time, and asked for the public to be patient as the incident is under active investigation. Additional updates, police said, will be provided as information becomes available.

However, the release did note that the 15-year-old male victim required and received immediate medical attention. His parents have been notified, and care supports are being provided to him and his family.

“There is no ongoing threat to students, staff, or the surrounding area with respect to this incident,” the BPS release stated. “To allow for continued investigation and support, students and families can expect an early dismissal today. School administration will provide further instructions.”

In its social media post, the school division also stated more information would be provided to parents and guardians “at our earliest opportunity.”
