PREGNANT WOMAN ASSAULTED
A Brandon man has been charged with assault and criminal harassment after a woman reported that she had been assaulted during an argument with her ex-boyfriend.
At around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, the woman told police that her ex-boyfriend had blocked the exit of her residence and took her cellphone and keys, a Brandon Police Service media release said.
Police said she told them that he had been harassing her for several weeks.
Police found and arrested a 24-year-old man in the 600 block of Lorne Avenue, and the stolen property was recovered.
The man was held in custody at the Brandon police station and appeared in court on Thursday morning.
Crown attorney Colin Standish told court that the victim was 38 weeks pregnant at the time of the assault.
The accused will appear again in court later this month.
ASSAULT BY CHOKING
Brandon police arrested a man after a woman told police on Wednesday that she had been assaulted a few days earlier.
At around 2 p.m., the woman made a statement to police that a man assaulted her on June 7.
She said he grabbed her by the throat, slapped her multiple times and pulled her hair, a Brandon police media release said.
She also said he had threatened her days earlier.
Police said they attended a home on Basswood Bay for a disturbance on the same day of the alleged assault, but nobody disclosed any information and no charges were laid.
Police said they found and arrested a man at his residence on the 700 block of Percy Street after the woman gave her statement.
He was released on an undertaking and is due in court on Aug. 18.
