An eight-year-old Brandon girl who has never cut her hair plans to donate 30 inches of it today to be used as a wig for children with cancer.
The local girl, KC-Lynn Thompson, with hair down to her knees, plans to have her first haircut at the Riverbank Discovery Centre as part of the events for National Indigenous Peoples Day in the afternoon.
Originally from Pinaymootang First Nation, at a young age she set out for “Rapunzel hair” down to her ankles — but this year, after spending a week at the Children’s Hospital of Winnipeg, she thought giving some of her hair away.

“I know how kids are having a hard time having cancer,” she told the Sun on Thursday. “It’s like very kind, to help people.”
Her mother Destiny said she wanted to encourage her daughter’s impulse toward kindness, and so arranged to mail the hair to Ontario, where it will go to Wigs for Kids Canada. Destiny also launched a fundraiser through Cancer Care Manitoba to support children with pediatric cancer in Manitoba.
“She wanted to share what she had,” said Destiny. “I have terrible anxiety about this, but it’s something she wants to do, and I can’t say no.”
The fundraiser is hosted on Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation’s website, called “KC-Lynn’s Locks of Love,” and raised $176 as of Thursday morning.
