Arrest in sexual assault

Brandon Police Service arrested a man after Brandon Regional Health Centre reported a sexual assault on Saturday.

BPS received the report at around 4 p.m. and sent officers to BRHC, where a 19-year-old woman gave a statement, police said in a news release.

Police found a 28-year-old suspect around 9 a.m. the next day and arrested him.

The man was released with a court date of Sept. 15.

Assault with a weapon

Brandon police arrested a man after he was allegedly igniting a spray can while pointing it toward people on Sunday.

Security at Shoppers Mall reported at around 3:30 p.m. that an intoxicated man was lighting and pointing a spray can toward people.

Brandon police found and arrested a 26-year-old man in the 1200 block of 18th Street.

The man was held in a BPS detention cell and scheduled to appear in court Monday morning.

Damage spreads from shed fire

Officials are investigating a fire that happened in the early hours of Monday that resulted in the total loss of a shed.

Brandon Police Service and Brandon Fire and Emergency Services were called to a shed on fire in the first block of Lorne Avenue East at around 3:30 a.m.

The affected residence and neighbouring residences were evacuated, police said in a news release.

Police said there were no injuries.

BFES put out the fire, which resulted in a total loss of the shed along with damage to the back of the house and to the side of a neighbouring residence, the release said.

BPS and BFES continue to investigate.

Assault suspect denied bail

Police arrested a man after he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend on Saturday.

Police said the man also damaged her vehicle using a golf club before snapping it in half.

The suspect was already under release orders to not have any contact with the woman, the release said.

When police arrived, they cleared the residence and found out the man had already left and issued an arrest warrant.

On the next night at around 10:30 p.m., police received information that the man was in the same residence.

When police arrived, they found a man hiding with a kitchen knife, the release said.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man and he appeared in court on Monday morning to apply for bail.

The Crown was opposed to his release and said they believed if he were to be released, he would pose a threat to the public and specifically the victim in the alleged assault.

The Crown said the accused has allegedly assaulted the victim multiple times before, resulting in the no-contact orders.

While the defence offered a strict bail plan, including no-contact orders and a 24-hour curfew if the court deemed it necessary, Judge Patrick Sullivan said his decision to deny bail was not a difficult one.

“I don’t think there is a bail plan that I could conceive of that would give me the confidence I need to release you,” Sullivan said.
