SOURIS — Whistles and voice commands rang out over the show ring as four-legged competitors from southern Manitoba and Saskatchewan took direction from their trainers during the Stock Dog Shoot Out on Friday.
A stock dog is another name for a herding dog — a kind of canine that has been purposefully bred to herd livestock, or belongs to one of the breeds that have been developed in human history for herding.
Black and white or red border collies, like many of those in the Souris competition on Friday, are a fine example of stock dog breeding.

The competition includes classes, including horseback, nursery — for dogs under three years old — intermediate, novice and open.
Around the noon hour on Friday, during the nursery and intermediate classes, dogs and trainers manoeuvred sets of three yearling heifers into various partitions set up around the show ring. Points were awarded for speed and agility within a five-minute limit.
The stock dog competition took place on the opening day of the 2025 Souris Peacock Days and Fair, which continues all day today and tomorrow at the Souris Fairground.
Today’s events include barrel racing, a kids firefighter rodeo, a garden tractor pull, peacock calling, and a market that runs from noon to 5 p.m.
