With hotel rooms scarce due to wildfire evacuations, Brandon University is taking in about 200 participants in the Prairie Cup lacrosse tournament this weekend.

The university found out about the unexpected guests at about noon on Wednesday, and has since been getting everything ready, BU marketing and communications officer Rob Henderson told the Sun.

“We’ve got a lot of open space in the summertime, but we weren’t prepared to fill it,” he said. “Obviously, there’s that rush to get that space filled and to get things ready for people.”

Henderson said the guests will stay in residence rooms, along with the few people who stay there year-round.

“There’s quite a bit of space in our rooms at this time of year,” he said. “There’s enough space to accommodate the 200 people or so, but it’s more so just getting that space ready and to be able to welcome the people in.”

The university often hosts people for bigger events, he said, such as turning the area into an athlete’s village, but officials usually have more time to get things ready when that does happen.
