Three candidates are on the ballot for a byelection in the Municipality of Oakland-Wawanesa on Thursday.

The Ward 1 (Wawanesa) byelection is one of several happening in western Manitoba, with yet-to-be scheduled votes due to take place in the Rural Municipality of Cornwallis and the Town of Swan River.

The three candidates running in Oakland-Wawanesa are Glen Parsons, Ryley Gullett and Joe Hunt.

Polls are open Thursday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. in the municipal office council chambers at 106 Fourth St. in Wawanesa for the Ward 1 byelection. (File)

Polls are open Thursday between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. in the municipal office council chambers at 106 Fourth St. in Wawanesa.

Advanced voting took place between the end of June and yesterday.

In the RM of Cornwallis, Reeve Sam Hofer resigned his post in April, and the municipality said it will also hold a byelection.

Acting reeve Terry Ross told the Sun last week that the RM has been working on hiring a CAO, and that the process is almost done. Once the CAO is settled in, he said, the byelection date will be set.

Town of Swan River CAO Will Tewnion said there still isn’t a date for its byelection.

When Coun. Tracy Boychuk resigned, he said, the town went to its senior elections official to schedule a byelection, but the election official also resigned.

Tewnion said the byelection was delayed because the town had to hire a new person to organize it. Nominations should open at the start of August, he said.

Meanwhile, the Town of Neepawa held a byelection last week to replace outgoing Coun. Lisa Pottinger.

Dave Clark defeated Sheri Grant with 272 votes to 88.

The Municipality of Grassland cancelled its byelection for Ward 3 after no one was nominated.

Council will appoint a second representative for the ward, as all three of its wards host two councillors.

And late last month, Sara Turko was acclaimed as a councillor for the Municipality of McCreary.

On the provincial front, a byelection date has yet to be set for the riding of Spruce Woods. Premier Wab Kinew has to schedule that byelection by Sept. 16.

Two people have confirmed they are running — Colleen Robbins of Souris for the Progressive Conservatives, and Brandon teacher Stephen Reid for the Liberals.

The Green party said it won’t be nominating anyone and the NDP have yet to announce a candidate.
