Fleeing scene of accident

A woman was arrested Monday after allegedly fleeing the scene after crashing her vehicle into a hydro pole.

Brandon Police Service received a report around 8:30 a.m. that a vehicle travelling in the 400 block of 11th Street collided with a hydro pole and knocked it down.

Witnesses told police the woman who was driving left the scene on foot, police said in a news release.

Police found the address of the vehicle’s registered owner, where a 27-year-old woman admitted to driving the vehicle and using it without the owner’s permission or knowledge, the release said.

The woman had blood-alcohol readings of 0.170 and 0.160 on her breath tests.

The owner of the vehicle made a complaint statement that his vehicle had been stolen.

Police arrested the woman, and she was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning.

The woman faces impaired charges as well as charges for failing to stop at the scene of an accident and theft of a motor vehicle.

Assault causing bodily harm

Brandon police arrested a woman on Monday after receiving a report of an assault.

Police say the alleged assault occurred on Westaway Bay. A woman went to the home of another woman and allegedly punched her in the face and stomped on her foot.

A 21-year-old woman faces a charge of assault causing bodily harm and was scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 29.

Aggressive panhandling

Brandon Police Service arrested a man who was allegedly “aggressively panhandling” outside of Walmart on Monday.

The man also allegedly had a box cutter lying on the ground next to him, police said in a news release.

The 35-year-old man was allegedly breaching two court orders that prohibited him from having knives and a probation order to not attend Walmart, the release said.

Police arrested the man, and he was held in a detention cell overnight.

James Pruden-Robertson appeared in court on Tuesday morning to apply for bail.

The Crown opposed his bail, saying he would pose a risk to the public if released.

The Crown noted Pruden-Robertson was warned not to possess knives or attend Walmart and that he had appeared in court on Monday, where he received a sentence for a previous offence hours before his arrest.

The defence lawyer said that while Pruden-Robertson shouldn’t have had the knife, he wasn’t using it for a dangerous purpose. He was using it to cut up a cardboard box to make a sign asking for money.

The lawyer said Pruden-Robertson has been homeless for the last four years and his only income is from social assistance. He said he was asking for extra money so he could buy cigarettes.

The judge released Pruden-Robertson under several conditions, including a $500 promise to pay, not to panhandle and to appear in court for all his hearings.
