The NDP will name Brandon realtor Ray Berthelette as its candidate in the upcoming Spruce Woods byelection, the Sun has learned.
Berthelette, a former executive assistant to Brandon East MLA Glen Simard, confirmed Wednesday he is going to represent the party in the byelection.
“Yes, it’s me,” he said when asked if he was the candidate being announced by the party later today. “I haven’t stepped back.”
The NDP are expected to officially announce the Spruce Woods candidate at 3 p.m. today at the Monterey Estates, located at 40 Mockingbird Dr. on Brandon’s North Hill.
Premier Wab Kinew will be at the event, according to a press release Wednesday. Doors open at 2:45 p.m.
The party didn’t confirm on Wednesday afternoon that Berthelette had been chosen as the candidate.
The NDP is the last major party to announce a candidate. Both the Progressive Conservatives and the Liberals announced theirs in early June. The Green party said it won’t be running anyone.
The PC party has chosen Colleen Robbins from Souris as its candidate in the byelection, and the Liberals named Brandon teacher Stephen Reid.
The byelection date has not yet been announced.
